Captain John J. Gage's Company, the Wigfall Guards, mustered into State service May 2, 1861, and was probably not accepted for Confederate service. Some of the members of this Company subsequently served in Company H, 25th Mississippi Infantry (changed to the 2nd Regiment Confederate Infantry) which on May 8, 1862 became Company D, 1st Battalion, Mississippi Sharpshooters.
